Here are some photos of my SMTA's hydro set up and starter. What kind of power steering is this? Also, should it have a valve in the lines for the steering? I dont know anything about the SMTA's and never been around one in person. So anything you can tell me will be a big help. I think the starter is from a 400, but not sure.

Thanks,
Keith

Keith – I took another look at your photos. Hard to tell for sure from the pix but I don’t see a flow divider valve either. And if the flow divider is missing Dan’s observation is right: The power steering can’t work - unless the Liftall lever is pulled back and locked and the 3 Liftall hyd outlets are all dead headed. Otherwise the system will not develop pressure to work the PS unit.

Is the PS functioning on your tractor now?

Re the starter, I would assume this has been changed over to use a push button instead of a rod to engage starter. I changed the starter on my SMTA over to push button but didn't mount the silinoid on top of starter. Is this still 6 volt? I don't see a priority valve in the system. The PS wouldn't work if you tried to use the lift all would it?

No, it has a 12V battery now. The coil still reads IH 6V though. I assume that it needs a resistor to the coil.

The PS does not work right now. The lift all was very low on oil when I got the tractor and I havent filled it up yet. Going to fill it up today and see how it works.

Your assumption about the resistor is correct! If there's not a ballast resistor in series with the coil primary you need to add one. Otherwise the points will burn up quickly. Also you could overheat and ruin the coil.

Keith - That’s an aftermarket Charlynn PS setup. No external valving is required aside from the flow divider valve located in the pressure line before of the 4 way remote (the "Christmas tree") valve inlet. Punch below for a scanned copy of the original installation instructions for the Charlynn installed on my Super M.

The Charlynn is a good system – reliable and steers nice. Mine was installed about 30 years ago and it still works great!

That starter could have come from any number of tractors – including I think a 400.
