ok we have been having this problem for 2 summers now ever since we added a 60" mower deck to the 1940 Farmall A. It seems to get hot and wants to quit and then it wont start till it cools down. It will start to get hot and miss and doesn't run smooth and then sometimes after you stop and go to take off it will quit. Then you are dead in the water it wont start (hand cranker only) best case you can tow start it but not always. If it cools down or first starts it will fire up on the first crank 2 on a bad day. The radiator does gurgle after we shut it off like it is warm but I thought it was normal with a thermosyphon. Ok Is it possible the Mag is bad and is getting hot and causing it to run bad? Could it be I still don't have the timing right and I have it to far advanced and it is getting hot? Could I still not have the valves set right? Maybe I should get a new radiator? Could a condensor be causing this?
It will fire right up and run but even after you run it for 5-10 minutes or so it will not start back up till you let it it. any ideas? My dad is ready to go buy a different mag for it but I do not think that is the problem????? ??

The sound from the radiator is probably from crud in the block as there are a couple of holes below the sleeves where the water can flow thru for the system to work proper. You can add a water pump easy. The hit and miss is caused from the mag either condenser or the coil. There is no need to change the whole mag.

Chad, The symtoms you state here sound to me like it's a bad coil. When they get heated up and are going bad , they will just open and that causes you to lose eletrical power past the coil.Once they cool back off they will pass current again and the tractor will start.

Sounds like the mag has become sensitive to heat – not unusual as the mag gets old. Try filling a plastic bag with crushed ice and wrapping it around top and sides of the magneto (leave the distributor part of the mag sticking out). Secure the bag in place. Now run the tractor under load with the ice bag on on the mag. If it doesn’t quit, or if it runs longer before conking out the mag is the problem.

You could change the magneto – but a rebuilt is gonna run $150 - 200 or so. However it’s probably either the coil or condenser has become temperature sensitive - and you can change those out yourself. Figure about $60 for a new coil and condenser. Note: If you replace the coil and condenser it’s a good idea to replace the points too.

Good luck!

I think if it were mine and I haven't had the radiator cleaned and checked out I would remove it and have it cleaned by a good radiator shop.
From there I might try it to see if it worked but I might also just go ahead and put a water pump on it while I have it apart. Sounds like it is getting too hot which will lead to more serious problems if not fixed.

Chad, If the tractor has not had the electrical components changed recently, you could start by checking what kind of spark you have, weak or strong! New plugs, wires, cap and rotor. New condenser. Check your timing. My 42 A makes gurgling noise when run in the hot weather of summer, nothing to worry about unless your boiling over. Hope this helps a little.
