I put an oil gauge on a 656 gas, the pressure is 37lbs at high idle. When at operating temp the pressure will drop to 20 lbs at idle, with 10-30
oil, is this aceptable? or is it time for bearings? thanks.

Brad: You probably should go to the Case-IH dealer and ask for the update package for your oil filter base. It will have the new metal poppets for the oil pressure and check valve ports in it along with new springs to replace along with them. Hope that cures the problem if it isn't to late. Be sure to check the seats where they seal first. Good luck Brad.

I don't believe the store about the pump pumping so much, the same pump bearings as 460 560 gas desiel 706 gas 806 gas 756 gas 706 desiel. The problem with the spin on filter was the filter base just a wafer fiber valve that was no good, later IH came out with better but they should have left the gast iron base on never had trouble with them. The 706 G & D & 806 Gas had the gast iron the 656 first with spin on filter base, check it first. The valve could get off to one side and not hold pressure.

I have a 560 with the same engine and I had weak pressure with thin oil. I changed to sae 30 and it runs at 38 lbs all the time,fast or slow,hot or cold. Last winter I changed it back to 10w 30 because I was feeding with it and it took a while to get up to pressure at -0 degrees with the sae 30. IMHO anything over 20 lbs is fine. My diesel ford pickup idles about 12-15 lbs hot but anything above idle it jumps up to 45. I've seen detroit diesels that had just been overhauled that would idle 5 psi hot. In summer heat sae 30 or sae 40 won't hurt a thing.Mine don't like multi grade oils.

Chris,

You've got a point.

When I was a pup, I was taught that an engine really only needed 8psi to lube, so he probably has plenty of life left.

Although, I do think that with those kinds of pressures, the evidence of wear is certainly there. Don't they normally run up around 50 to 70 lbs?

My manual says it should obtain between 30-40 psi at 1800 rpm gas and diesel. It never hurts to pull the pan and inspect the bearings. But I tend to lean toward the,if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I pulled the pan on my H last month just to have a look, I have never been in there in the 12 years I have had it.

Hey Brad,

This is what the local Red Shop told me:

The weakest point on a 656 is the crankshaft and it's bearings because the 656's oil pump can pump so much volume that problems can oftentimes go unnoticed until it is too late.

He says that the rods and mains ought to be checked as a matter of course every 5 years. He says to check the bottoms of the mains and the tops of the rod bearings because this is where the greatest load occurs. But, bear in mind that all the while he was talking to me about a diesel engine, tho.

Your pressures seem awfully low and since your's is a gasser, maybe you might want to think about the upper end too? Somebody told me that 5000 hours on a gasser was about at the outside limit.

I think it is a darned good thing you hooked up the gauge; you probably caught a problem before it developed into a major headache.

Brad I would say not aceptable but the problem could be in the oil filter base. The oil filter base was changed on the 656 to a spin on filter and the base made out of aluminum the valves were not very go, had to replace some or them when the tractors were new, same with later 706 756.
