I just bought a 240U with only 616 hours on it. Been sitting inside for the last 8 years. Clutch is apparantly rusted to the flywheel. What is the best way to break it loose short of splitting the tractor? I'm new to IH. Just sold my JD B. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi Guys, Like the idea about pushing it off the axle stand. Had a JD 2950 done this, tried all the usuall stunts, driving around, revving up and down etc but nothing worked. Finally in desperation I removed the starter, propped down the clutch, positioned a heavy bar up against the flywheel and give it a good belt of a sledge hammer. Sounds brutal but it worked with 1 wallop, did no damage to the flywheel either. Nigel.

This has never failed me. Put one rear wheel up on jack stand. Start engine. If not outside, open door, give it 1/3 throttle. Have a helper push it off jackstand.

Thanks,

Allan

I had that problem on a JD MT I picked up. Got it loose but it didn't all come loose together so had to split it anyway. Good luck.

I had the same problem with a tractor that I recently purchased. Drive it around in 2nd or 3rd gear and alternately apply brakes and clutch pedal. Mine broke loose after about 10-15 minutes. Good Luck!

My brothers 74 Gremln used to do that. He would start in 1st gear and speed shift it to 2nd and then tap the throttle until it broke loose.

I don't know if this will work but if ya hook it up to something that it can pull and put it in gear then start it, but make sure ya push in on the clutch because it won't have the pressure plate pushing on it. You still would be a good idea to change everthing though.
Let me know if this works

I have seen a neighbor with a big A4T with that problem he put it in 3rd started it and ran around the field with the clutch in throttleing it up and down untill it broke loose. I had a chevy truck that used to do the same thing but I used low gear. JON

JOon,

Is this a regional problem?

I've been twistin' wrenches all my life and never heard of this until I started reading all the guys' posts about stuck clutches here on this site.

'Course, I live out here in the semi arid region too.

Thanks,

Allan

Hi Jon,

It is really strange that it is so wet in some regions and so dry in others. Lots of folks out here have been irrigating alfalfa for two weeks now.

The young fella who rents the farm has already run the pivot around on the corn. It is so dry out here!

I live way out here in the opposite corner; 25 miles from SD and 80 from Wyo.

Allan
