A Seat ?

I have a 44 A with a seat assembly that looks like it came from an H or an M. It's a pan seat with a coil spring suspension and a shock absorber. The main arm runs down and bolts to the floor pan at the brake pedals. My granddadddy bought her new but he passed on several years ago (that's how I got her). No one else remembers the seat ever being changed. Also the serial number plate is not where it should be. I've had to rely on the engine serial number to ID her. I've heard that it could be a 'rare' option. That would be cool but if that's true then why no plate? Any help would be appreciated.

Andy, I have a 1946 Farmall A with the same seat you are describing. I have heard from others that this was an aftermarket seat to replace the orginal seat which has real stiff springs. One of the things they did when they replaced the seat was remove the old seat brackets. The left seat bracket had the serial number on it so I too had to get the year mine was made from the engine serial number. Roger

I believe these were offered as options by IH. Parts book for the M shows them. Probably were offered on other series tractors as well. Neighbor has a B with same seat, his ser.# plate is missing too. Ser. # plates were attached to original seat frame and was most likely left on it when removed to attach present seat.
