Woundering about hitch placment. i have the hitch so it is lined up just behind the rear tires, the front stays down good. Would it be better to make the hitch longer to pull down on the back more? would it put more weight on the wheels. New to pulling Th

Don, I have heard everyone say that you want to hitch as high and as short as is allowable. I have been pulling my M for quite a while and it does better hitching back at 20 & 22 inches. It seems to pull down better on the M design. When the front wheels are just floating you are balanced correctly. The next problem then becomes power. We have a slow first gear and we pull slowly, like an old JD. With 14.9 or 16.9 tires we are traveling at 3 mph at 1650 rpms and you don't have to worry about running past the pace tractor. An M with the 3 mile per hr. 1st gear will run out of power quickly. To gain even more power we have removed a half inch from the head. I have never check teh HP, but I would guess it to be around 80 in the slow first gear at 1650 rpms.

Hey I pulled my H last fall and the seasoned guys told me you want it short so the front stays down( good for safety and cant get DQed for it) but they said you want it short so as the weight moves forward the sled cant dig in the dirt more, this is because the drawbar is holding it up because the front cant come up and let your hitch point down. Make sense? Good luck, I am restoring the H I pulled last fall but have since bought 3 more and one is a 1939 with a 350 head. Gonna steal the head for one of the others and have a set of 9 bolt pressed steel to use too. Have fun and be safe.
Matt

You might get a bigger response if you post something on the pulling forum. Hope it helps.

Usually in my experience you want the hitch close to the tractor (shorter) and up a few inches to gain more traction. ---Jeff
