Just what do you have to do to get an old M to run on Distillate? I have an old 42 with a hole for the small gas tank, but no small gas tank. Do you just start them on gas and switch over or is there more to it? Was just wondering..... I'm too young to know, and all Dad is familiar with is the old 400 diesel. Thanks

You also have to have an all fuel manifold.

You won't find distillate, IH also made kerosene heads. With shutters, etc, it is still possible to make it run on kerosene.

Actually, isn't petroleum distillate the same as mineral spirits? I remember seeing the words "petroleum distillate" on the cans when I was shopping for paint recently. The small quart I have for cleaning brushes is odorless mineral spirits, but it has a faint smell to it, similar to gasoline.

Even with today's gas prices, running a distillate tractor on mineral spirits is not exactly economical :)

I think the term "petroleum distillate" will be found on many products merely to inform the public that the product contains petroleum products -- I look at as an all-encompassing slang term.

Haven't had any actual experience myself, but the general concept is to start it on gas, let the engine warm up, and then switch to distillate. As well as needing the small fuel tank, you also need a set of shutters in front of the radiator to keep the engine warm.
