I got the rear end tore apart Sunday, the left axle outer bearing has the seal on one side like it should have, the right one is open on both sides. I checked prices at 3 places today, C-IH dealer wants 77 bucks for one, I asked how many balls are in that new one, he said "11" the ones in the tractor have 16, the 2 other places had bearings that had a seal on both sides so I couldnt see how many those have in them. My question is: does it matter how many balls are in there? I am tempted to call Rice Equip. out in PA to see if he has original 16 ball bearings, if I can't get a "16 ball", I am tempted to put these back in & over fill the transmission to make sure that bearing gets oiled. What would you guys do?

You might just overfill the trans to get oil to them. I think you might be missing the point. You are concerned about the number of balls, when you should be concerned about the proper lubrication practice. These outer axle bearings require grease. If you look at the end of the axle housing there is a grease zerk that needs to be lubricated quite often. The bearing use the grease for lube, not gear oil.
Just my input.

Thresherman, I know the outer ones are supposed to get grease instead of oil, I just thought if I couldnt get a bearing that has a seal on 1 side oil may be the best alternative to keep it lubed. Maybe the other thing would be to grease the heck out of it & let the grease go into the axle housing even if it wasnt meant to be there, at least it would be greased, but that still wouldnt keep oil out.

Roger,

That's interesting. Reinforces the reason these old things lasted so long. They just plain were build stouter back then.

Good luck with the fix,

Allan

Roger, the bearings you're taking out may not be the originals. Your M is over 50 years old, and if it's been used hard, they've probably already been replaced once. I'd want as many balls as possible in those bearings if the tractor was mine. I'm not sure about the specific bearings you're dealing with, but many of the bearings in the rear end of an M or SM can be replaced with 560 bearings. In some cases, they are considerably heavier. I have both an M and SM which were upgraded everywhere possible the last time they were opened up in the mid-1960s. They've seen considerable use since then, and have had no problems.

Thanks John, I'll have to check to see if the one at the dealer will fit a 560, some of these I took out have IH stamped in the race so some may be original, I dont know

Thats wierd, the same bearings in my were both open,Id bet the one with the sealed end was replaced at one time or another. They have gone up too, since 99 that is.I think that since i knew mine would never work again I put the 11 in it.I can check in the morning.
