I need to know how to make the proper adjustments to the carburator. The engine sputters and seems to have no power sometimes. I've made adjustments to the carburator but it doesn't seem to make much of a diffeence in the engine leveling out and running smooth. Can you tell me what adjustments I need to make to the screws, float, jets, etc?

With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until it begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more to be sure the engine isn't running lean.
The same proceedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the ldle stop screw to set the low speed RPM. On the "H" carb, the idle mixture screw is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Go through this proceedure a couple times and if the carb is clean your fuel problems should be over.

There are many things which will contribute to engine running rough, the carburetor is but one small possibility. You also need to think about spark plugs, ignition wires, coil, the distributor itself. also, leaking intake and exhaust valves, or just improperly adjusted valves. Then there is always the possibility of leaking intake manifold gaskets, or the gasket which goes between the carb and intake could be leaking. I don't mean to scare you here, your problem is probably simple and easily fixed. Start with the easy inexpensive things first, and progress untill you have solved the problem.

The most common mistake made is that whenever a tractor is not running right is to adjust the carb. Insure you have the ignition right first. Then if you cannot get it to run right then your carb is probably dirty.
