Maybe someone can help? I have searched the post to no avial. I am in the process of converting my 39M to a negative ground 12v system but cannot figure out if anything has to be done to the starter? Will it spin backwards by changing the polarity? Or will everything be okay?

You might want to consider changing the starter drive to a heavy-duty clutch type to eliminate the spring. I converted an M about 25 years ago that had a loader on it and had trouble with the spring breaking or the bolts stripping out of the drive. Converting to the clutch type drive from an automotive parts store solved the problem.

We converted my Dad's 52 Super M to 12V two winters ago. There was no problem with the starter.

The starter does not have any magnets in it like a typical DC motor. Both the rotor and stator are electromagnets. When you reverse the polarity on the tractor, you reverse the polarity on both parts of the motor, and it ends up turning in the same direction.
