My 41 H starter every so often will lock up and you have to loosen it and retighten and will work fine for maybe the next 30 starts.Sounds like a problem with the starter drive.Would it help to shim the starter away from the flywheel a bit?

My starter did the same thing. Replaced the starter drive for about $40.00 and it did the trick.

Problem's most likely a worn starter drive pinion. Figure about $40 if you replace the drive yourself.

Don't shim the starter away from the flywheel! All that does is hasten wear on the remaining engaged portions of the ring gear teeth. The previous owner did that to one of my tractors. In addition to having to replace the starter drive now I gotta split the tractor to replace the ring gear - back half of every gear tooth is nearly worn off.

Probly not. Mine does the same thing and there was a post a few weeks back about this. The best thing would be to check the starter drive. Lightly lube or replace. I have some stough called dry slide I got from a machine shop that works well for these type of things. JON
