I have a '61 Farmall 460 that won't go. I drove it out of the barn, used it a some and now it won't move. I can shift the trans into all the gears (TA forward and back) but when I let out on the clutch the tractor won't move. Never had clutch or TA problems before. It runs fine, so I am pretty sure it ain't locked it 2 gears. We pulled it with the motor shut off and I put it in 2nd gear let out on the clutch and stopped the truck. Anyone got any ideas. I gotta get the hay cut soon.

By reading these other posts I wonder if you have a bull gear locked with a piece of metal like a ball out of a axle or brake shaft bearing, usually wont lock up in the transmission but possible, dont get too rammy without checking it by jacking up 1 rear at a time and see if it will rotate by hand, these were known to have bearings go out after many hours. If it had a mounted picker for example the extra weight would accelerate the problem, any way not a good idea to drag it to see if it will come loose, severe damage will occur.

Thanks for the info Lee. A neighbor has the spliting stands and is going to help me get it fixed. There is a bearing out around the TA somewhere, so we going to have to take it down anyway. I would still apreciate any additional info anyone may have.

Unfamiliar with the design of the TA but I assume it's possible it's stripped.

I think I would look to the clutch first.
Does it have the normal feel when you depress it? Are you able to release the PTO clutch?
Does the pedal have the proper free play? Sounds like something wrong in the clutch or pedal mechanism. You say it seems to shift OK. Trans or TA problems would be offering up more symptoms. This sounds like a worn, broken, or mis-adjusted clutch or the clutch is somehow bound up and not releasing. Mice sometimes build nests in clutch housings. You should have an inspection hole or cover there. Take a peak. Have someone depress the clutch while observing. Adjust free play as you can sometimes get a bit more out of a worn clutch.

does the engine stall when you let out clutch in gear?

No it does not stall. Its a gas motor. I can put it in gear but it won't move. I am pretty sure the clutch didn't go out. It happened all at once. Kinda like a shaft twisted off. But I wasn't working it at all.

So it's no go at all when you have the engine running, select a gear and let out the clutch. Nothing happens. No noise, no nothing, not enev the slightest bit of drive? Will it slip into a gear from neutral with the clutch out? But if you try to tow it , it stops the truck, the rear wheels lock up? It's baffling. I don't have any section drawings of the 460 drive train. If I were going to tow a tractor to start it I'd probably use a high gear like 4th or higher. Not sure towing this machine is a good idea though. It's a planetary type TA on the fly, not a gear type hi/lo?

It's a Torque Amplifier. I only tried to see if it would free wheel in gear when we pulled it out of the way of the hay conditioner. I have PTO out the back and the hydraulics work fine. It does seem to try to rock a little bit when I put it in reverse and 2nd gear. HELP! ! !
