Farmall C Govenor problem

I recently acquired a 1949 Farmall "C" tractor and it seems to have a govenor problem. I've never worked on these govenors before. When you open the throttle just a little, the engine starts revving way up on it's own, then you have to slow the throttle back down. It's very sensitive. Can anyone tell me what to check for or do I just need to rebuild the whole govenor? Thanks for any reply!

Probably play in the linkage on the gov. Then setting the linkage to the carb after repairs have been made should cure your problem.

I had the same problem with our Farmall A and B. When I took them apart I found someone had used the wrong parts, parts woren out etc. I had to completely rebuild the governors. Now they work like new. Don't forget to change the pins holding the fly weights in your rebuild. If the holes in the weights are woren to much, you may have to replace the weights also. Most parts, pins, bearings, bushings, gaskets are still available from your Case IH dealer. Make sure you have a good manual before you start also. Rebuilding these governors is a fun little project and is worth the effort. When these governors are in good condition, they are a very sensitive acting governor. Good luck with your rebuild!
