I've found a 460 Utility tractor and need some advice. The hydraulics are extremely slow. The fluid is milky. I expect it needs changed as it appears there is moisture. Fluid was added ( don't know how much)but didn't seem to speed it up. Just took out some chatter. Will changing and putting in a new filter solve it or is it likely to need a new pump?

Also not impressed with the 40" bucket. It has a IH 2001 loader which seems to be fine. Can it handle a larger bucket?

With a 3-speed is it geared to handle a mower and blade ok.

Thanks for any assistance!!

I can tell you that the Genuine IH Hytran will turn milky color if its overloaded with water, the filter needs changed also, this would be the minimum I would try, might cure the problem, if it has been run in cold weather it starves the pump of any oil because the intake is low for the pump and this is where the ice forms worst, nothing thru the pump will damage it, the 2001 loader was designed for the 40" bucket, you could make a larger bucket for lighter material such as snow by adding steel to the one you have. The 460s all had 5 speed transmissions.

Are you sure they all have 5 speeds. This one only has 3 and I was concerned that it might not be geared to run a mower very well. However, the individual hooked a 6' bushhog on and said he was able to mow 3' weeds with it. Had to go down to 1st though.

The serial # is 2919 PUX. What can you tell me from that? I couldn't find a good internet site that had a lot of info. on these tractors. Can you help?

Thanks!!

2919 built early 1959, PUX, 540-ipto, fast speed 1st & reverse, high altitude pistons. As for speeds, take off shift lever tower and there should be 3 rail fork notchs, 1 &R, 2 & 3, 4 & 5.

well my 460 ute has a 5 speed, and i pull a deere 307 6ft mower with it mostly in second,as for the filter on the hydraulics, you should have done that with the fluid change, can't remember how much fluid your gonna lose doing it ,it's under the football shaped cover on the right side right by your foot as you sit on the tractor and if i remember correctly its basically just a screen, but it could be plugged ,i know my hyds aren't the fastest on the planet, hey it's 40 yrs old,i'm 40 and don't run like i did 20 yrs ago.and the only problem with bigger buckets is you'll lift more and these little guys get very front heavy in a hurry,so if you do add ballast to the back wheter it be fluid in the tires or a weight box on the back.also when you do this you will notice that it won't steer very good either, thats their weak point, when i mow without the loader on it it steers great but just putting the loader back on and the steering gets kindof a cross between power and no power, then put a load in it and the easiest way to turn is backing up,

Thanks Ken!

The fluid hasn't been changed yet. I'm debating on purchasing the tractor or not. I am concerned about the hydraulics and was hoping to learn something about them and the tractor itself. I need one to mow, blade and lift things around my acreage. Can't really afford to put a lot of money into a "lemon". What can you tell me about the 460 Utility tractor?

Sounds like it is a pretty handy little tractor. Back to my original concern on the hydraulics. When the fluid gets milky does it seem to have a major affect on the hydraulic system? I believe that this is extremely slow the way it is now. I am certainly hoping that changing the oil and filter on the hydraulic system will cure things. As is, it is basically useless as a loader. Was really hoping that I would not need to put in a new hydraulic pump. What size of a bucket do you have on your loader? This loader is a IH 2001 model. It would be nice to have a quick hitch loader system.

I'm looking at a package deal including a 6' blade and a 6' Bush Hog Mower. The tractor seems pretty sound other than the hydraulics and the 40" bucket. The carburetor has been gone through and a few gauges replaced. Wiring for the lights will need to be checked. It is a 12V system. Is that standard or has it likely been converted?

I live in Colorado. What about yourself? Thanks for the information.

i'm in n.w. iowa,,40 inch bucket, man thats not very big ,mines at least as wide as the back tires.i can scoop snow and the back tires are on scooped ground as for width probably 6ft,as for the hyds i know mine was a whining a little and then i see it milky and changed it,it cured that problem but i didn't have the loader on then so i can't tell ya if it was slow, and they did come 12 volt.and my lights need some attention too.what are they asking, just to give you an idea i bought mine from the local jd dealer, it was on death row so to speak, and they said it didn't run and that there was something wrong with the transmission ,they said they were going to sell it to a salvage yard for 1300. and if i wanted to give that fine with them,so i did, then he tells me he has a loader for it and we check it out and it's a nice black westendorf and they want 1750 for it. so i buy that too. so for 3050 i get a non running non moving tractor with a nice loader.anyway i go to do a little checking and it has no battery and pull the gas cap and about fell to the ground, rotten a gas anyway but it was about empty so i put 5 gals of good gas in it and pull the carb drain and runn a little thru it then crank and it won't start so check and no spark so go across the road to IH and get some points.,put em in eyeball em and crank and i don't think it rolled over once and started so hopped on and drove it a mile down the road to my friends farm where we have a shop.and it didn't like 4th or 5th it wanted to slip so get checking and some dumb a-hole added an inch to the clutch rod.so i tapped the threads on the clevis end an inch so i could get some play in the clutch and now if i stomp on the brakes in 5th it will kill the engine.so much for trans problems.so after valvecover gasket and side cover gasket and fluid change and a few other things i probably have at least 4000 in it.but it does need tires and i'm missing a piece of tin on the side and it puffs smoke when i work it hard, usually just one good puff and then shes clean.i have seen them sell around here for in the 5-7000 range though for nice ones.

They're asking $6000 for the tractor and finally agreed to throw in manuals and split the cost of a hydraulic pump if needed. Hopefully that is a fair price. I hate to get the short end of the stick and am not a real gambler. The tires are in good shape with at least 85-90% tread. Tin is pretty good, however, it seems like there should be a piece about 6-8" on each side that is missing.

My real concern was the hydraulics and I wanted a larger bucket. I'm hoping that I can find one or do some modifications on one sometime soon.

if they do throw in manuals make sure they are for the 460 utility as alot of stuff is totally different from the row crops.like power steering .you get a bush hog and a blade that s probably not too bad of a deal .if you are using it as an acreage tractor i think you'll like it ,i love mine it's just the right size enough power for anything i'll ever need and small enough to fit in the tight spots,if ya do buy it you'll have lots of fun with it.

does it have a 3pt or just the fast hitch, either way they are workin little units i like mine to no end as for mowing like i said i have a deere 307 that hooks to the drawbar and the pto shaft to it,and really like it, get the high suction blades and it mows almost as good as my regular riding lawnmowers plus it hacks out 6ft at a time.and i have a westendorf loader on it that can be removed in under a minute.so it makes it pretty versitile.also mine is fast hitch and i recently picked up an IH model 200 2pt 8ft blade for the back and you can apply down pressure when bladeing now this might not sound like a big deal but where i'm at in the hills i have lots of clay and when it rains if you walk on it you sink in 6 inchs, and can't walk on it decent for 3 days, but if you blade across it with down pressure a few times it kinda packs it and heck the next day its cracking and you can walk on it.i really like that blade. if you can get it reasonable i'd go for it in a heartbeat.and if it's a 3pt i know a guy near me that has a model 300 ih 8ft blade for sale. plus another thing i like about it is it's short so i can park it in my garage, and it's a wide front so don't have to worry so much about tipping on the sidehills.motors run smooth and pretty good power,my hyds could be faster but i don't mind, you kinda get used to em.the somewhat main problems i've encountered are the pivot bolt on the back on the front a-frame.they get loose thru time ,and the steering shafts or tie rods are good for chewing up the tie-rod ends,i think i've replaced all 4 and i have one of those feeling a little loose already.i would think if it steers pretty good and easy the pump is probably alright,as for the milky fluid,it is a common problem if you leave it outside in the rain it seeps in and then you have milky fluid,so if you do get it keep it inside when not in use.
