Extra condenser on Super C 12 volt conversion

I recently purchased a Super C from my Uncle's estate. It has been converted to 12 volts. I read Bob Melville's article on this board and it was very helpful, but I have noticed that my tractor does not have the "warning light", but it does have what appers to be an extra condenser connected to the negative side of the coil. There is also the standard condenser inside the distributor. Do I need this extra condenser? The tractor starts and runs fine. Any comments would be appreciated

Two condensers in parallel will give you twice the capacitanse. Use the right condenser for the 12 volt coil or if there is no pitting or burning on the points leave it alone.

The points on my H would burn fairly quicky until I added a second condensor to the wire between the distributor and the coil. Your second condensor might be a left over from the tractor's 6 volt, positive ground days.

Don - Is the 'can' part of the condenser fastened to grounded metal? If so probably the coil came from in a car equipped with a radio. The condensor would be the RFI (radio frequency interference) suppression condenser.

Should be no harm removing the condensor - it's not doing anything. Unless of course you have an AM radio on your Super C and are bothered by static!

Yes - the can of the condenser is strapped to ground. No radio! I'm considering going back to 6 volt as I restore the tractor...so this shouldn't be an issue if I do. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Bob,

Heck, I'd leave it on there.

I agree, it was probably originally intended to supress radio interference, but it would also help in the "point burn" dept.

Sure couldn't hurt anything, in my view.

Are you sure this is a condenser (or called capacitor today). What you think is a condenser could be the voltage droping resistor for a 6 volt coil. I have seen where people have put this resistor in series between the coil and distributor. I don't like that type of a setup. If you have a 6 volt coil, you should have a resistor in series with the wire coming from the switch to the coil. Do not remove this resistor!
