Is there any alternative to the somewhat goofy fan support scheme? I apparently have the bearing going out up there and am getting some disturbing noises. I've never liked the way it all looks with the pulley sticking out so far with no support. To me it just looks like a bad design.

Thanks,

Dave

These things have been around since 39 and were used till 53 or so. Just because there wasnt any lube added that does not make bad design. New one will stick out the same or else the belts wont line up i am only using 10 tractors with the original type.

like the other posts have said, run the belts as loose as you can, and take out that screw and add some oil

Has the fan been lubricated recently? The screw visible in the picture is for lubricating it. As Haas said it must be a pretty good design to last over 50 years. I don't think the one on my C has ever been replaced...at least in the over 40 years I have been around it.

Bad designs don't last for 50 plus years! You can buy a new fan assembly complete with ball bearing for around $100. However, it won't last 50 years as it will have a "lifetime" lubricated ball bearing. I think the reasons for most of the failures on the original design are 1) failure to maintain the bearing by checking the oil in it and refreshing the oil on occasion and 2) too much tension on the fan belt, putting excessive load on the bearing. Belt should only be tightened per the manual and that is not real tight.
