Paint Questions/Opinions

Would be interested in whoever's opinion on brands of paints, types, etc. I don't know a lot about them but when I get ready to paint my H I'm sure I'll need some help. I looked at some at Tractor Supply Co. today; does their paint do well? I want to get the correct color (not sure what it looks like) because some of the tractors I see are a little brighter red than what I think they should be. What about regular enamel versus the polyurethane types such as DuPont Imron etc.

Are there satndard paint numbers available to get the correct hue/tint? I'm thinking about taking my gas tank, hood, and grille to a pro to have it painted and do the tractor frame myself. Pros/cons?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Don't buy paint from any farm store, use the 2150 from your Case-IH dealer or the IH 2150 or IH 50 (pre-1949) equivalents from DuPont, PPG, Martin Senour, and others. TSC and other tractor store paint is synthetic enamel, meaning old paint technology. It may be ok if your tractor is inside, but it fades rapidly. Case-IH paint is a form of acrylic enamel, the acrylic enamels from the major paint companies are probably better, but Case-IH is adequate. The best paints are the acrylic urethanes, they can be VERY expensive; less expensive, but still much better than the old synthetic enamels are the PPG Omni and Dupont Nason lines. Urethane paints REQUIRE hardeners, acrylic enamels look better and are more durable with hardeners. If you use hardeners you MUST use a supplied air system to protect your lungs, a ordinary charcoal filter mask is not adequate. People have died doing that.

I sweated over this question a year ago when I restored my 52 Super C. I wanted to use the really good stuff, but after reading about the health hazards of hardeners, it scared me away from it. I used IH 2150 without hardener from my local CNH dealer and am still very pleased with the results. Also, the IH 2150 in the spray cans is an exact touch-up match. I paid $44.00/gal in May 2003. The IH paint I used was manufactured by Valspar, a really large paint outfit.
I am restoring a 59 Cub right now and have every intention of using the 2150 on it.
The paint appears really bright red when first applied, but darkens some as it cures.

You say Case-IH's paints are made by Valspar? The last time I used TSC's paint it said manufactured for TSC by Valspar inc. I also have had bad luck with TSC's paint and will never use it again.

Thanks folks for the advice. The tractor will be kept inside for most of its life now so it sounds like the OEM paint from IH is the best choice. Is there a difference in paint numbers for different years? My H is a 1940 model.

You know, opinions are like rear ends, but I think you will find that IH2150 is pretty much the accepted restoration color for all Farmalls manufactured after 1934 (I'll probably get shot at on this, also;-)

I don't own a gun. Case-IH considers 2150 as the correct replacment color for all red Farmall tractors. That is the only paint they sell for the older Farmalls. There were actually 3 colors (don't ask me for the differences because I have never seen them side by side): IH 50 up to about 1949, 1102b until the "late 1950's", 2150 thereafter -- someone said 2150 also had another designation, I don't know. Far as I know no one has the correct code for 1102b, so 2150 is used instead of 1102b. IH 50 is not sold premixed but can be mixed by PPG, DuPont, etc.
