I have a 656 diesel hydro. The hydro has about had it and I'm looking into other options than overhauling it (deal quoted $5k to $6k on the overhaul). Did any of the 656's come with a geared transmission that I could either swap in, or maybe swap the engine out of mine into one with a geared tranny? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated! Let me know if anyone has any of the parts I may need for sale! Thanks!

Matt,

I don't know what part of the country you live in, but I know where there is a 656 setting with a bad engine and has been abandoned. Bet the guy would sell it for a song too.

My email is turned on it you want me to check it out for you.

Allan

Wouldn't be interested in just selling it, huh?

All you would really need to do is split the tractors at the bell housing and marry the diesel front with the gear drive rear end. Less work than completely removing the engine.

So there are 656 gear driven models? Would any other models fit? Thanks again!

Yes, there are thousands upon thousands of 656 Gear Drives out there. Gas powered 656's are a dime a dozen. 666 and 686 are the same thing, just newer.

All I ever see in the Market Bulletin are geared. I think the hydro didn't really catch on around here, we're sorta slow to take to new stuff. Also on a tractor that old people are more likely to not spend the money to fix the hydro than they would be to rebuild a clutch.

So would a gear rear section from a gas 656 mate up to a hydro diesel front section? Let me know if anyone has one for sale! Thanks again!

No, you made no mention of a geared rear section from a "gas" model.

Just split the tractors at the clutch housing and bolt them back together. The only other thing you might have to change is to take the front oil cooler from the gas and put it in the deisel. You would not need the larger hydro cooler with the gear drive.
