Well I thought after flushing the hydrolics, cleaning the cooler, and adjusting the clutch all was going to go well. And it was until today. While raking I got the same loud screech and all movement stopped. Depress the clutch and all shifted, let the clutch out and screech... put it in neutral let the clutch out screech... So I got out the old Super C to finish up the job. Any ideas? Now that the tractors cooled back down it's running fine again.. The real kicker is I tedded/raked for 3-4 hours yesterday with the 454 and it never missed a beat..

Hi, very interesting problem.. screeching stops when clutch is depressed..that would indicate the problem is somewhere from transmission drive shaft back thru transmission .. but you say when transmission is in neutral it screetches with clutch engaged. Does it screetch if you change the 1,2,3,4 shift lever to different gears ?
Does this tractor have TA? I know it was not common to have TA on 454 only on 574 and larger.
The transmission shaft runs inside the PTO shaft until behind bell housing and in front of transmission. This is where hydraulic driven PTO clutch pak is to engage/disengage rear PTO shaft.
The PTO shaft is splined to the pressure plate and turns all the time.

Since screetching stops when clutch is depressed, my guess the problem is a bearing on main drive shaft on the input to the transmission.

Good luck and please post solution when you fix it.

That's what I was afraid of. I don't get any noise while shifting between gears, they go pretty easily. And their is no T/A. I did notice while moving it today I've lost some of my power steering while at low rpms. Maybe taking one of the hydro pumps out?

Hi Joe, I still have difficulty believing the problem is a transmission bearing as the transmission is constantly being lubed by the hydraulic system.

Can you tell were the screeching is coming from ?
From transmission area or clutch are ?

I was wondering if a rivet from clutch pad or something like a pressure plate spring has broken and is causing the screeching inside the bell housing.

It could be possible, I haven't been able to really find out where the noise is coming from. Every time it happens I'm the only one in the field so I don't have any help to help locate it. And it gives the feeling of "this can't be good" when the rear end just locks up. I've had pressure plates that broke springs and I couldn't shift, could it make everything come to a complete stop?
