Hauling Prices?

I have been trying to get someone to haul 12 tractors out of Spur , Texas to Western , Pa.
When I set down and do the math, it is 1460 miles one way. If a truck gets 10 miles to the gallon, that amounts to 146 gallons of a fuel. At $2 a gallon that is $292. Everybody I talk to tells me that $1.00 per mile is the going rate. People who get stuff hauled must not care about the prices they pay. I say this because people offering to haul feel that they are doing you a favor to haul one tractor for $1460. No one in there right mind is going to pay that? Even if they haul 2 tractors that is still $730 per tractor. Perhaps I am losing it, but I can't afford to haul them at more than $400 per tractor. Does anyone have a contact with a 48 footer who could haul tractors out of Texas at about $1600 to $1800 a trip?

I think you are right Jed, you have 12 tractors to haul, and a long distanc haul, so if you can find the right trucker you can probably get it done. Your plan to do it yourself is courageous
but by no means a cake walk. Best of luck.

I have had several tractors hauled in to me in Illinois from Conn. and other places out east. I just posted ads on this site on " hauling schedule" and chose the one I wanted. In almost every case it ended up costing me .40 to.50 cents per loaded mile. The trucker usually put on 2-4 tractors on the load. He must have been doing OK at that figure or I would assume he would charge more. I was pleased in all cases. I can't take time off from work, pay fuel, motel, food, etc. for that price with my own truck and trailer.

Thanks for your comments. For those of you who think I am asking for someone to haul for fuel, you didn't read far enough. I don't need to know what tires and other expenses are. I am well aware of expenses. I just think that having all costs covered and then making an additional 100%
ought to be enough. Obviously I am wrong.

Jed, would you work at a job which only paid you twice what your expenses were for getting to that job? Think about that.

Rustyfarmall, You know, it just gets to a point where you might as well buy a bigger trailer and do it yourself. I honestly thought someone might have a 48 footer and be willing to haul for around $1600 to $1800 cash money a load. I have got a dually in Texas and so I bought a new 25 foot drop deck in El Paso for $3900. I will back haul from Pa. at a $1.00 per loaded mile. I figure I will gross about $6000 on my returns and I should clear around $3000. When I am done I will sell the trailer for around $3500 and I will have the tractors here.

Regards-Jed

Now you're talking, pretty much the way I did it. Just a little word of advice, be sure your truck and trailer are licensed for the weight you will be carrying, the fine will be more than the cost of the heavier registration. Also, buy yourself a Rand-McNally motor carriers road atlas, it will pinpoint the weigh stations, plus give you other info that is nice to know. Good luck on finding those back hauls.

High price? My Pete and flat cost $6200 a year, insurance, IFTA (fuel Tax) runs $1200, average maintenance (oil, filters etc.) with no major breaks is $2000, not to mention tires at $350 each. Registration and tags $4500. Did I forget to mention fuel at $2.00+ per gallon. I get 6 to 7 mile per gallon. That is before I eat. $1.00 a mile is a very fair price.

There is no way a man should think someone could haul for just fuel. Truck low end paynents on 18 wheeler 1200 hundred trailer 500 month tags 700 to 12 hundred a year insurance 1695 every 6 months. That was my payments fuel miliage 3 miles per gallon.

If all the truckers were getting paid for was the fuel the truck used, then how are they going to pay for the truck? How are they going to pay for the license, or the insurance? How about the clothes he is wearing, or a meal every now and then? There are many more expenses involved in trucking than just paying for the fuel, and you want a tractor hauled 1,460 miles for $400.?

I am moving 1,000 miles and I can't justify sinking the haul money in much of my stuff either.
3 tractors (one in piece parts, I've got to take that one with me). The rest I'm selling. A 53 Ford truck, may sell also. SWad to say I think you may need to part with some of those old girls.
