I have a C with a 3pt that works off the touch-control rockshafts. The other day I was working with a 7' grader blade and a cap blew off the cylinder block (no threads on the cap). I lost quite a bit of hydraulic fluid but I could still lift the blade as long as the engine was at high rpm. I found the cap about 15 feet from the tractor and replaced it on the block.

What caused the cap to blow off? Can I simply refill with fluid and try again?

I had this happen to one of my C's last year. I had replaced the fluid in the hydraulic system and had filled it up to the bottom of the fill hole instead of 1/2" below the hole. After running it for about an hour it built up enough pressure from the expansion of the hotter fluid that it blew the explansion plug out. The plug is a lot like a freeze plug in the block. Less than $5.00 for the part. Just about as much to have it shipped to me. My local Case/IH dealer was able to get one for me. It is a 2" expansion plug, part # 172 592. There are a total of four of them located on various sides of the hydraulic block.

I learned the hard way that the hydraulic system is a sealed, non-vented system. I person needs to loosen up the fill plug a little and then wiggle it around to release any pressure before removing it completely.

I assume you mean one of the 1.5" or so diameter caps on either side of the block.. Not sure I have an answer for you. The block has a check valve in it. That or some other valve, etc could have stuck and allowed pressure to build up. Only answer there is to remove the block, clean and rebuild it -- about $90 in parts. You could have too much fluid. Fluid is added until just below the filler hole with the two levers in the rear position. Or if the tractor sat a long time without being used, condensation set in, perhaps rusting the caps to the point that they don't hold, in which case it will happen again. I vote for a stuck valve, but I'm not sure.
