I am in the process of tearing down my 240, and after I removed the front grille and brackets, I noticed a 2" pipe plug in the front of the frame. It looks like the outlet is cast into the block below the bottom radiator inlet. Is this a drain for the water jacket by chance? I put a 1 1/4" wrench on it a tried with all my stength to loosen it, but no luck, so I don't think its ever been loosened.

Is there any other way to drain the water out of a 240? I can't find any petcocks around the front of the radiator or engine.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds to me like you have been trying to remove the steering worm bearing retainer.

Two drains for the coolant. One is in the lower elbow, the other the side of the engine block.

Jim:

Thanks for the reply. I finally found the pipe plug on the water outlet elbow, it was covered by dirt and grease and seemed to be part of the casting. My only probem is that I can't get it out because of the frame extension being less than a half inch away. I can barely get my finger in there. I saw what looks like a thumb screw on the left side of the engine block, but I didn't think it was a water drain because it is about half way up the side of the block, and of course I thought there would still be water below its level. I guess I'll just have to let the water drain, and then get a mop and start swabbing.

Thanks again.

Jerry
