Just picked up a 1959 IHC B275. This tractor runs nice when it runs but getting it started is a problem. It seam to want to start (lots of smoke) but just can't catch when it is cold. After it warms up it starts easy. Before I start replacing injectors and glow plugs. Has anyone else had similar problems with B275 ?

Hi,
pull the cover off the rear of the starter and look at the brushes, mine had one spring broken and had to turn up armature and reset brushes.also pulled solinoid to bits and cleaned up terminals you can swap disc side for side to get a new contact area..

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have replaced the glow plug switch and wiring as well as a new battery and cables. The motor seams to be turing fast enough with the starter. I will now check the pump timing and each glow plug. How cold is cold ? Today was about 70 Deg. (British Columbia Canada)

My B414 had the same problem. There were several problems.

1. The glow plug switch didn't work. Couldn't find the right switch from IH or any where else, so I put a starter switch on the dash. Found that the wiring from the switch to the glow plugs was bad. Replaced the wiring with heavy duty gauge wire. Glow plugs work.

2. The battery wires were bad. That made the starter go slower than normal. Replaced the wires and the starter spins correctly...fast.

3. Battery wasn't getting the proper charge. Got an alternator instead of the generator.

Push the glow plug button for 30 seconds, hit the starter switch and 3-4 cranks later, she starts right up with a huge puff of smoke, smokes for about a minute and clears up when it gets warmer.

These old tractors are fun sometimes, frustrating like a good crossword puzzle. Have fun and let us know how it comes out.

How cold is cold? The BD144 engine used in the 275 was never revered as a great cold weather starter. You could also have low compression but I think UFO is probably on tack.

Lee,

It doesn't have to be cold cold for these birds to have problems starting. You are right, though, the IH diesels are some cold natured old girls. Without glow plugs, you'd never get one started in the winter short of towing it or keeping it in the kitchen.

Here in Texas, it was 100 degrees the other day and I figured that I wouldn't have to hit the glow plug switch. After 10 20 seconds of grinding, nothing.

Hit the glow plugs for 30 and boom, away we went. In winter, when it gets into the 30's I have to push the button for up to a minute.

That takes a good battery, fully charged.

Hi, check the glow plugs as they are wired in series and if one burns out the others will not work either. The other cause could be fuel injection pump timing. If for some reason someone has had the fuel injection pump off and did not re-install it properly. If the injection pump timing is to slow it causes hard starting, lots of smoke but no fire.
If it is timed to fast, it will cause the engine to kick back on the starter.

I have a 1960 B275 and the glow plugs don"t seem to be working, at least the indicator dosn"t show them to be working. I seem to be getting power to the first one though. Is there anyway to test these. I was told they are pretty durable any it"s very unlikely that the are bad. Any help would be appreciated.
