Over-filling hydraulics - part 2 - '47 H

I'm thinking about getting a loader for my '47 H and am wondering about the capacity of my lift-all system. Eventually I'll put live hydraulics on it but, for the near future, I'd like to get away with what I've got. I read the post about the 350 and it seems the same would apply to my H. If the loader's 2 cylinders take more oil than the lift-all can hold (and I guess it's O.K. to fill it all the way up to the bottom of the fill tube) I can plumb in a 2nd tank via the drain hole at the bottom of the lift-all. I'd like confirmation on these points and I am wondering why is there a full mark on the lift-all dipstick if it's really O.K. to fill it up to the bottom of the fill pipe? TIA

On the loader that was made for the H, the non pressure side of the cylinder was used as a resivor. When the loader was raised, the oil in the other side (Non pressure side) of the cylinder was forced back into where the Lift-all filler cap is, thereby giving more oil for the lift-all to use to raise the loader more. The dipstick was removed because it would block the oil comming from the non pressure side of the cylinder. The lift-All cap was removed because it was vented and replaced with a pipe that connected to the 2 cylinders to the Lift-all filler hole.

John's right, make sure you run hoses to both ends of the cylinders (replace the dipstick with a tee connector and run hoses to the non-pressurized ends of the cylinders), don't just vent the non-pressurized end. That way the cylinder catches any overflow from the main reservoir and keeps dirt out of the system.

We had a '48 H when I was a kid. It had the one-way cylinders on the loader. I don't remember there being a problem with it running low on oil. That was many, many, many years ago. Memory sometimes has a way of tricking us. For the loaders that were designed for the H, I think that there shouldn't be any problems with the volume. Just do like riverbend does and cycle the cylinders. Just don't fill it with the loader raised all of the way up or you will definitely have a full reservoir when you lower it again.

O.K. I guess I'm getting ahead of myself. The loader I'm looking at is, I think, a #45 John Deere, which someone told me would bolt on to an H. I imagine I'll need to get new used cylinders for it because the ones that are on it look like the rods are pretty rusted. It looks to be the same general age as my '47 H so I would imagine everything you said would apply. I still have the question of why they have a 'full' mark on the dipstick if it doesn't really matter? Are they just giving folks a place to fill to so as to avoid the possibility of oil spewing out the vent holes?

Dave, I have seen many a John Deere #45 loader mounted on Hs and Ms, you will not have any problems at all with the capacity of the hydraulic reservoir. As far as your question about the full mark on the dipstick, you may totally ignore it, in fact, you would be just as well off if you took the dipstick out and put it in your spare parts storage, I really don't know why IH even put a dipstick in. If the loader does not lift all the way to the top, add more oil. It's as simple as that.

I'm guessing, but the cylinders on my loader are (2) 2 1/2" X 36". Once the loader is on and cycled a few times, I just fill the reservoir to the full mark. It works fine - for snow.
