The hydraulic oil on my 350U with power steering gets so hot the pipes will burn your leg. Several people have told me it's because the oil capacity is so small for the pump volume and to live with it. I've had a LOT of hydraulic problems, which I attribute to the over-temperature. I'm seriously considering installing an oil cooler in front of the radiator, and plumbing it into the Power Steering return line. Will that make an appreciable difference in the temperature, and might it cause overheating in the coolant?

Your main problem is almost certainly that the hydraulic system is stuck in high-pressure mode, which means the engine is continuously dumping a lot of power (which gets converted to heat) into the hydraulic system irregardless of whether the hydraulics can use it or not at any point in time.

The major malfunction is most probably a clogged orifice in the regulator/safety valve block (rear, inboard valve block where the supply pipe for the power steering comes from). When this orifice gets clogged, the flow of hydraulic fluid which unloads the pump gets blocked and the system is continuously producing high pressure whether it needs it or not. In your particular system, it's also possible that the priority valve for the power steering (located in the same valve block ) is somehow malfunctioning and continuously loading the pump, but this is much less likely.

The other question is where the crud which plugged the orifice came from. Probably the screen in the hydraulic reservoir has a hole in it (and may be completely collapsed which is not uncommon in this model). Unfortunately the 300/350Us require draining the entire hydraulic system and disassembly of the reservoir to check/clean/replace this filter (i.e., it's not as simple as the 340U apparently is). If you do this, you have to lift the top of the reservoir STRAIGHT up or you'll destroy the filter and end up having to replace it whether it really needed it to be replaced or not.

If you go the cooler route, you "might" fix the symptom, but almost certainly won't cure the disease. If your pump is continuously operating at high pressure, and especially if it's doing so at high temperature, it's not going to last very long; it's will be quite expensive to replace. Good luck whichever route you decide to pursue.

Had the same problem with my 340 Utility. Do not think you need a cooler. On the Hydra-Touch Control Box, sitting directly in front of the shifter, there is an internal screen. Mine was completely plugged. Replacement of same solved problem. Had to remove the outer cap. Inside on the left side, as memory serves, there is a slotted screw like device. Remove same and remove the screen being careful not to push it into the unit. Good luck!

The 350U will be quite different, if you are talking about the little screen about the diameter of a pencil in the relief valve. Mine was plugged also on my 300U. To get at it on a 300U/350U, you need to remove the pressure regulator/safety valve, that is mounted on the right rear of the reservoir (the seat mounts on the top of the reservoir). Remove the end cap and there will be two large cavities with springs and the screen you mention is kind of between them, looks like a screw with a hole in it.

Ibby are you sure the system is not staying on high pressure I don't think it should get that hot if not.

Sounds to me like the hydraulic system is not unloading and is always making pressure, I would check out the relief valve and the bypass valve.

It will do a couple of things for you. One it will not cause the coolant temperature to get too hot unless you are totally blocking the entire radiator. Something like an automatic transmission oil cooler should work just fine. Also by adding the cooler you are increasing the volume of your system so that will help some, albeit not very much. Although the tubing/hose to the cooler will dissipate some heat.
