Super C transmission question

YTers,
My SC has a loud whine in 4th gear. It is relatively quiet in the other gears. What would be a suspected cause? Can I work on the transmission from the top, or does the tractor have to be split. I have the seat box off repairing it, and thought it might be a good time to go ahead and take the top off for a look inside.

Thanks,
Bill

High gear in all letter series has sort of a whine, relatively low frequency, more like a hum -- may be normal. If you do mean LOUD, then perhaps you need to pull the cover, it is heavy, takes two people or an engine hoist. If it is quiet in the other gears, I have a feeling it is ok.

It is a very annoying, high-pitched whine in 4th gear only. 3rd is more noisy than the lower gears, but nothing as bad as the 4th gear. I've never worked on a transmission before, better with engines. I assume since it is only the one gear it would be a worn gear rather than a bearing.
Just a play tractor, my solution for right now is not to use 4th.

Thanks,
Bill

A whine is usually from wear. My manual indicates that the transmission can be accessed by removing the top cover. A set of manuals is a good investment for any old tractor you might own or work on.

I just got my owner's manual, perhaps a workshop manual is in order. I've been spending my "tractor allowance" on parts rather than manuals.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

Be sure to get a parts book too. They show all the parts and usually the order that they go together. That can be a big help if you can't quite remember what went where. The transmission is very straight forward. Lots fewer parts than the motor. A parts book is also very useful in ordering the correct parts when faced with a younger partsman.

Gears wear out in pairs, i.e. $$$. The good news is that there is a lot of gear to wear out. Noisy gearboxes are pretty common on these tractors, most of them are 50+ years old. If you can get the cover off, it is worth a look. If it looks reasonable (you'll know), and you are not using it in the winter, you could try a heavier grease.
