I picked up a H with a locked up engine yesterday, and noticed it had a dipstick for the engine oil, cast right into the block on the right side.Looks factory, but I've never seen one with one. Does anyone know when they started putting them on? or is it a different engine? its a 48' model. Thanks

When our 1942 H was o'hauled in 1959 we installed a dipstick, and after painting appeared as a
original feature.

Dipsticks weren't standard fare on tractors until the 350, even though the bosses were cast into the engine blocks right from the get-go. Combines had dipsticks because the oil pan petcocks were not easy to get to.

Either this is a combine engine, an engine out of a 350, or someone drilled the boss during an engine rebuild, or at least while the oil pan was off. You don't want to go drilling holes in your engine block while it's in the tractor.

As far as I know all Hs had the area for the dipstick, it just was not drilled out. It would be a fairly simple matter for someone to drill a hole and then install a dipstick. There may even have been an aftermarket kit for this purpose. Also, I don't know for sure but I think some of the stationary power units may have been equipped at the factory with a dipstick. You may want to compare the casting codes and serial numbers to determine if the engine is original to the tractor.

me and my fathere own a tractor repair bussiness and in some of the books i have read the H's and M's in cotton pickers had dipsticks because u couldn't reach the petcocks if the picker was on the tractor. but it may also be a combine motor. also another thing that is weird and people will say it is not the original thing are disk brakes on an M (they could be bought as an accessory)(according to the parts and repair manual at my shop) if u like i can scan it to prove it.
