5th gear is different then all the other gears in the transmision. It is a gear you do not want to grind while putting in gear. Unlike the other gears that are just a standard type gear that meshes with the one below. 5th gear actually ingages by moving over the input shaft.
Here is a photo of the 4th and 5th sliding gear.
As you can see if you grind the gears you can do the same thing as stripping out a phillips head screw. Could also be some of the things others have mentioned. or all of the above.
Hope this helps.

It could be the shift lever, or the detents. However, more likely the sliding 4th/5th gear, part number 358023 R1, 18 and 35 teeth. The 18 teeth on the inside of this gear are the ones that grind when you shift into 5th while the tractor is moving. They are probably nearly gone. Also can be a bad pilot bearing, 358036 R91. Also Aetna number RK-5205 or Hyatt BU-5205.

Check the shift lever too, we have an M that had the same problem, would jump out of fifth at the least bit of a hill, ended up changing shift levers and that cured the problem, the end was warn.
