Hello,
I have a 1940 M that was stored in a barn since the mid '70s. It is in nice condition & the motor is loose, but over time someone stole the Magneto/Distributor from it.
How do I find out if it originally had a Mag or a Distributor? I already have a Distributor from a junked McCormick W-9, and was wondering if it would work.

thanks,
Rusty

Mags & distributors from A's, B's C's & all the Supers are also the same. IH began to sell both IH & Delco (the right angle ones) distributors to replace mags in the '50's & there are a lot of them out there. You can use any of them to replace a mag. Allis Chalmers also used the Delco's & they will work, too. Any 4 cylinder distributor that has the same flange will work, but you might have to figure out the rotation & match it to your firing order. We've used IH stuff on Case's so if you find a good Case mag, it will work as well, but parts for Case mags are nearly impossible to find. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Hi Rusty, The distributors from the following tractors will fit the Farmall M: H,HV,MV,W4,O4,OS4,W6,O6 and OS6. They all have the IH part number 353 890-R91. You should be able to find one of these that has been junked.Hal

Hi Rusty, Is there an ignition coil mounted on
the engine? Mags do not have coils mounted externally. The mag coils are installed inside
the magneto. The W9 distributor rotates counter
clockwise. Call a IHC shop they may have a junk
Farmall M or they can look up the W9 distrbutor to
see if it will fit the M. Good Luck-Hal

If it has a two wire switch it had a distributor. 1 wire would be for a mag. The 40 M came out with a magneto.I don't know if the W9 distributor will work.
