Hmmmm,

Times must be getting tough all over. Both lawn mowers and my H have been relieved of their fuel.

I guess it is hard for these kids to smoke dope and buy fuel at the same time.

Wish I coulda seen it; bet they had a fun time packin' the gas down outa these hills. :>)

Allan: This can become a bit of a chalange. Have seen numerous items tried. Replacing with diesel is quite effective. I know a guy who tried a scare off shot with a 30-30, he came a bit too close. No he didn't hit the theives, but he did put a hole in the trunk and gas tank of his new Crown Victoria, lost all his gas anyway. Then had to get the car fixed. Kind of embarasing going to a shop with that one.

Some guys have had good luck with jugs of gas with a cup of sugar in them. Only problem I see with that, theives may just come back and put a cup of sugar in your tractor tank. That being if they figure out what happened.

One night I had worked late in the shop til around 2 am, as I headed for the house I heard noise around my old pickup. I figured what it was, so I got an empty pump shotgun from another pickup, and crept around where the gas thieves were. One held the can other was sucking on the hose, I pumped the shotgun once and said dropit, the one with the gas can took off, the one sucking on the hose got a mouth full and ran off coughing. On the way to their car they must have fell about 6 times each. We now have locking gas caps on everything.

Father-in-law thought his gas in the bulk farm tank was going down a little fast. Had supplier put some diesel in it when time for refill. Next morning there was a car stalled, parked a couple hundred yards from the driveway. Police refused to handle the complaint.

We had similar problems with disappearing gasoline back during the brief fling with gas rationing here in the early 70's.

Solution then was to park a tractor conveniently near the road, drain the gas tank then dump in about 10 gallons of diesel. Was easy for the sheriff to track down the thief the next morning - his Jeep turned up DOA about a half mile down the road. Curiously it's tank was half-filled with diesel.

Hi Bob,

Yes, I'm making a few adjustments to the security system around here.

This is kind of an ongoing problem in the country, tho.

I don't mind a few gallons here and there; I was young and stupid at one time too & I guess if they are that hard up, I can donate a tankful now and then without going completely into orbit.

Just so it doesn't get to be a habit. Like the one fella said, just don't mess with ma tractors! :>)

Allen, I mind a few gallons, just filled up a can for the mower, was 12.00 for 5.8 gallons. If they suck 15 from you that is almost 40.00. Run them off, Van

I remember being awoken in the middle of the night back in the 70s to the sound of a 12 gauge going off. My dad was cutting loose on some guys stealing gas from a tank about 50 yards from the house. Apparently they had clubbed the dog before he could do any real damage, but then like the sign says, "The H*** with the dog, look out for the Owner". Found out later it was some cousins from the lower branches of the family tree.

Here is a thought...leave them a little bait, such as a half full sacrificial gas jug left where they can find it possibly with a little something extra mixed in (sand?, water?). Perhaps they will then find it easier to buy the gas next time.

Allan, I think I could handle someone stealing a little fuel, but if they were stealing one of my tractors, Id be inclined to blow the dust off my model 77 Ruger 22/250 and take aim!

A friend of mine loses gas once in a while because no one lives out on the farm. For this reason he keeps just enough gas in the tractors he uses so he can start them and drive to the truck. Once in a while he discovers someone has relieved the fuel from a tractor which has not run in 5 years or longer and laughs about that, because he knows whoever took it did not get very far.
