kelly,
i recently sold a 300 and bought a 706 with the money. i bought the 706 from a guy who had bought it blown up. it was a diesel, and thats what he did, was to swap the d282 motor from a combine. i think he said it was a 715 or something. i dont know much about combine numbers. anyhow 06's and 656's both used 282. keep the glow plugs working and they arent as bad as everyone says they are. and they are great on fuel.

Kelly, You find a nice 756D with a canopy and buy it and then I'll trade you my 656D for it :) A 656 will make you a grand tractor. I love mine. I would like a bigger tractor for tillage, but the 656 works good for now. I had a 450 and sold it for the 656 about a year ago and would never go back.

We recently had a DT360 out of a bus put in a 756.

The key is finding the right engine, or you're into making custom-machined parts. That's fine and dandy if you've got the resources, but for most, it's much easier and cheaper to get something that'll bolt in.

For a 656, if you can find a D312 engine, you can use parts from a 686 and bolt it right in. The D360/DT360 block might be the same as the D312, too. I don't know what engine from a combine will fit. Maybe the D310 German diesel out of a 715?

One thing you'll quickly find out about a conversion is that there are a lot of little things that drive you nuts and cause the conversion to cost a lot more than you'd anticipated.

hey novel idea guy,
i was just wondering if the dt360 fit right in, and what liitle things drive u crazy. i often wondered if my d282 went bad if it would be cheaper to put in a dt360. but i had heard they were a longer block and framerail extensiuons were needed. thanks

Kelly,

I think that is a grand idea.

The only thing I can think of would be the govenor....what kind of a setup did the IH combines use? I know that Gleaner diesels used a pully/belt affair on their combines.

You might have to think about the pump linkage too.

Otherwise, it should go right in there and fit like a sock on a rooster. Ya might even be able to peddle that old thirsty gasser on ebay.

Later

Allan

The governor is an integral part of the fuel injection pump.

If I was going to do it, I would look for a 282 diesel out of a late-model 656. The sleeves fit tighter in those engines, which really improved engine life. Any of the glow-plug diesels could be made to fit, you need the 656 front cover, rear plate, and flywheel, which might interchange from the gas engine.

Just thinking out loud.
running Combines go for penneys on the dollar at the sales around here. I havent paid any attention to them as I need a combine like a hole in the head.
But if I had a reason to keep an eye out.....
Man wife would have a cow if I drug a big beast like that home from a sale.

Kelly, you need a buddy. The way it works you park your combine at his house while you strip the motor and he parks the pick up he's retoring at your place. Later after the wives finally accept someone else's junk around the garage you can usuually fool them into believing the next project is your buddy's when it is actually yours! My nickel Dick Davis. PS let me know if this works.
