I've got leaks like crazy. One leak comes from either the governer or the oil pan or the plate infront of the governor or all three. The other leak is coming fron the canister that I was told use to hold gas to start the engine because the tractor was a distillate tractor or kerosene tractor. The other leak is either the hydraulic belly pump the plate behind the pump or where the rear is attached just behind the pump. Also the fuel strainer leaks. Is this all normal for a 62 year old tractor or has this tractor just not been taken care of, or worked like crazy. I'm curious as to how much all these leaks would cost to get fixed or what stuff I would need to fix these leaks. I can post some pictures where all the leaks are if anyone needs help determining how easy or hard. The only one I think would be hard to fix is the last one where the rear is attached behind the pump or maybe its leaking around the pump. This tractor just leaks. Oh and theres another one. Gasoline leaks out the bottom of the carburetor after its been choked not even out of the drain cock but the little bump out on the bottom. I dont think its supposed to do that. Another problem is how much tension should you feel on the hydraulic engaging lever. Mines just flimsey and feels like its not attached to anything in there. Finally, the tractor misses, and just sounds all wrong to me. I think its because the carb is in such bad shape. It's probably not getting a good supply of fuel...I replaced the points, rotor, spark plugs and everything. I didn't replace the wires, but they seem like they are in pretty good shape. I'm afraid to even go inside the engine I'm afraid of what I might find. I just hope its pretty clean in there. It doesn't smoke to bad. Only when it first starts up, and when I give it a ton of gas. I know this is a lot of questions, but i just couldn't stop once i started. Thanks all

Jamie,
Sorry, no help on the technical issue but I just had to ask what part of the world you are in? Stratton isn't that common a last name and I am always looking for relatives.

BTW - I do participate in this board, I didn't just find our last name with some Web crawler.

Jamie, If you are on the Eastern shore, there is a guy in Cordova Md. that is very knowlegeable on Farmalls. I don't have his name and address right at my finger tips, (its around here somewhere) but if you are on the western shore, it is a moot point.

On the misses, it is real easy to get these cross-wired. Make sure #1 wire goes to #1 plug, etc. You might try pulling one wire at a time to see if you hear it start to die. If so, that cylinder is wired correctly. Yes, these engines will run on two, sometimes even one cylinder, so it is possible you have two, or even three mis-wired cylinders (most likely two, if at all).

The leaks are all normal for an old tractor..the seals and gaskets dry and crack with age. Like the others say, fix them one at a time. Most are easy...remove part, replace gasket, re-install part. Post here if you can't figure one out.

Good luck,
Dave

Jamie, I can't remember if you said that the tractor missed when you got it. If it did and the miss is constant, than it may be several things, a couple of which have been addressed by some of the others who responded to your post. One thing you mentioned is that you replaced the plugs, points, distributor or mag cap, but you assumed that the ignition wires were in good shape. You might replace the ignition wires, as a lot of replacement wires are carbon cored and not copper wire core. Believe me, your tractor will run better with copper solid core wires, especially if you have a magneto rather than a distributor. Since you have replaced everything else in the ignition system, my suggestion is that before you dig deeper such as manifold gaskets or sticking or burnt valves, you replace those wires. If it still misses, you won't have spent a lot of money, and it will be money well spent regardless of the outcome.

That's a lot of questions. First of all, if the tractor has set a while without being used, a lot of leaks are to be expected. All you can do is fix them one at a time.

It is normal for the hole in the bottom of the carb to leak after being choked. If it stays wet when the tractor sets for a period of time, you may have a leaking needle valve or improperly set float.

Two things on the miss. If it is constant all of the time and does not change with throtle setting I would check the valve clearance. A really tight or loose valve will make the engine run uneven and sound kind of like a miss. The other possibility would be the carb or manifold gasket leaking.

Best thing you can do is get the manuals and attack the problems one at a time with info from here if needed. None of the problems you mentioned are hard or terribly expensive to fix Normally :)

You need an operator's, parts, and service manual. You might also consider an I&T manual, as it is a good supplement to the IH manuals. The problems your tractor has are common. These tractors cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousand to fix. Get your service and parts manuals and start taking things apart, then ask specific questions for anything you can't figure out. I have just started on an H that has all the problems you mention and then some. I just finished a Super H that had most of them. You have to take them one at a time.

Not everyone enjoys an old tractor. If the problems seem to outweigh the possibilities, maybe you should
reconsider.

oh i enjoy it. I just need to get it to run better to enable it do those possibilities at top performance. Stop the leaks and get it to run better. I enjoy old tractors more then anything else.

Dad and I have been working on a '42 H, and it leaked behind the hydrualic pump, right where that plate is. We thought it was the old pump, but it was a rear seal. Was easy to put in. Just have a parts book handy when you do it.
Good luck.
