I am putting the head back on and the new gasket says "sealer/retorque required".
My question is what should I use for sealer and when do I retorque?
I tried to search the archives but the search utility is down for maintenance. Thanks in advance for your help.

Going from memory I believe the specs I finally determined for my F-12 C-113 was 100 ft lbs. I crept it up from 60 lbs, 10 lbs at a time going in proper sequence. I finally stopped at 95lbs, since it just seemed to be getting to the point where I was becoming concerned (perhaps needlessly so.) It sealed just fine and I have never had any trouble with it. I used some type of Permatex paint on copper head gasket sealer instead of the stuff you spray on, and again it seemed to work just as it should.

You can go to the parts store and buy a spray can of copper gasket (aerosol can). This is specifically designed for cylinder head gaskets. As far as re-torque on the head, after the initial torque, run the tractor up to operating temperature. Then take off the valve cover and re-torque all the head bolts to spec.

I think a while back we came up with 75lbs got no leaks, but I think 80lbs was spec.

70lbs caused leaks for some people

Remember to check valve clearance after retorqueing.
