I-H Heaven; Your in heaven right now, once you find all the tractor problems you will be looking for another dead tractor.
Put a portion of a winter isopropynol container into the gas tank. If you can rig up a small fuel tank and line that will rule out or prove lots of rusty flakes in the gas tank. (This is very common on the old neglected Farmall iron).
We have worked on several with excess rust in the tank. If the fuel path is rust restricted the engine fuel flow will suck too fast and she will fade or die. Pulling the tank and flushing out with water hose is one way to go. Some companies offer a complete cleaning and sealing service.
They are pricey and I have never used them.
Good luck.

sounds like the carburetor jets are partially plugged. just take the carburetor apart and blow out the little jets. that should do it.

The points shoule be set to .020" for battery ignition.

Sounds more like fuel to me, possibly a governor problem, but someone else will have to cover that. Take your carb off, take it completely apart, soak it in carb cleaner overnight, blow it out with compressed air, and put a kit in it. This assumes that you have new fuel, a clean gas tank, sediment bowl and lines. I seriously doubt that it is electrical, but the point gap is 0.020 for a distributer, and 0.013 for a mag.

I agree with little john. I'd do a mini-tune up - or at least confirm that the tune-up specs are in range - check on points gap with a dwell meter (should be 60 degrees), check the timing, clean and gap the plugs. Then run your coil check - pull the center wire from the coil out of the distributor cap and hold the end of the wire about 1/16" to 1/8" from a good ground. Turn the engine over and you should see a bluish-white spark. If it's yellow the coil is probably on its way out. You'll probably want to do this after it starts running bad.

Another problem I encountered was a bad external resistor in line with the coil. It had been converted to 12V but the coil was still 6V - hence the external resistor. When that resistor got hot, the engine would die and I couldn't restart it. I'd let it cool and it would run again. I narrowed it down to the resistor by leaving the battery connected and pulling out the shut-off switch. I'd leave it like that for five minutes and the resistor would heat up to the point it would be again in the no start condition. To simplify the system, I replaced both the resistor and the coil with a 12V coil with a built-in resistor. It's been purring every since. HTH

Check and make sure the plugs are the correct ones. Check distributer cap for cracks and carbon tracking.
MAke sure you have clean gas in the tank, and drain the bowl, may be water in it.

Possible coil problem? If they are bad, sometimes they will work until they heat up.
