I wrote earlier and didn't get a response.....I just drained all the hydraulic fluid out and there were two compartments that didn't drain from the trans plug or the plug under the pump drive ..one compartment had a separate drain ..but one didn't have any drain.....I removed all the fluid cuz it was old and now I just put in six or so gallons and the trans is up and so is the compartment for the pump drive but there are two compartments that didn't collect any oil.... are these supposed to be filled by removing the inspection plate.how much .....nothing is said about this in any of the manuals....those gears must require some oil????? thanks for any help....ken

In the future, you may want to title your posts with something more descriptive than "can you explain this," or "please help." A title like "problems filling 340 transmission" would cause more people to read your post. Many people don't bother reading posts with non-descriptive titles.

Your earlier post says you sucked the oil out. If you sucked it out, then you can pump it back in the same way. It's a PITA, but sometimes the designers of these tractors didn't quite think of everything...

thanks for the response and the tip about titles of posts....What is a PITA?? I did suck the oil out but when I put the top of the clutch compartment back on , I won't be able to do it then...I'm just concerned about the gears haaving enough oil..thinking about putting one of those trans plugs on top of the plate. Then I can remove the plug and stick something inside to ck for amount of oil..and if necessary put some oil in...what do you think?? ken

Ken: I didn't see your earlier post but it would help a lot if you gave make and model of the tractor.

thanks for the response..it's a 340 utility ..gas..has a direction reverser gear ..that's the compartment that didn't get any oil, as well as the compartment next to it. Only one of those compartments has a drain..and I can get to it via the small inspection plate ..but the next compartment toward the trans is not accessable if the main cover plate is on...to check that compartment, one would have to take off the dash, gas tank, steering box etc...this doesn't seem right thanks for any help...ken

upon futher reading in the shop manual they talk about drilling a hole between two of the compartments.....are we having fun yet...I think I just might fill the compartments up equal to the one that gets oil and maybe someday when the tractor gets spilt..drill a hole.....huh?????

Ken: As I see it you have a 340 with foreward-reverse drive. The only experience I have on tractors from this era is the 560 and mine was equiped with TA rather than F-R drive. It was either or in those days.

As I understand the problem you can't get the complete system to drain. When filled these tractors do transfer the oil from one compartment to the other. However when you want to get rid of contaminated oil, mainly water, it is very hard to do. That is one fault I had with 560 as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I am understanding your problem. The dealer did cure my 560 and very likely that drilled hole was the cure.

Someone else will answer, I'm not familiar with the 340.
