Leak at axle on H

My '47 H is leaking gear oil right where the axle comes out of the housing. The archives are still down so I need to hear the short story of what's involved in replacing the seal. Can I fabricate a gasket out of a 1/16" vegetable fiber gasket material or is this a bad idea - so much work with removing the wheel, etc. might as well use the IH gaskets. Is this the location I've heard folks talk about using a leather seal? I saw in a recent post someone talk about a whole gasket set for an H for around $75. Was this the whole tractor? The tractor minus the engine seals? Where's a good source for one of these sets? TIA

Not sure where you mean the leak is. It sounds like the leak is where the axel comes out of the axel housing near the wheel itself. If this is the case it isn't a bad job at all. Raise the tractor, remove the wheel and pull that cap off of the outer end of the axel housing. The seal is right there and a new one from Case / IH isn't very expensive and I would also replace the felt piece that is located with the seal. The biggest challenge with doing that is the handling of the tire and hub. It is heavy and kind of hard to deal with. I use a shop crane and it works pretty easy with the crane. Hope this helps.

Thanks. That's the short story I was looking for. I'm still wondering about the "complete set" of seals deal. Can one buy a complete set for an H?

You can check with Ken Updike at Carter & Gruenwald about a seal set. Just do a search for them and you can find contact information. I just ordered the seals that I needed when I worked on my H's and M's. Not a bad idea to replace all the seals for sure.
