We have a 986 with the front axle set close and are trying to move both sides out, but no luck with 20 ton jacks and jackalls. How do I get this thing loosened up?

Got it...806 as an anchor and a 4010 pulling on a cement pad, slipping in 1st gear and an 18 pound maul. Polished off the rust, greased them and they both slipped together by hand. Took two hours to get this job done with 3 people.

I have parted out a lot of wide fronts. If you try to push the extensions out you will never get them out. The way we get them out is work the front to back. Most of the time you have to start with a sledge hammer and it may take a few hits till they start moving.

Darald If it is that tight it must not have been moved in a long time, you may need a lot of liquid wrench.

I'm thinking this has never been moved. One friend suggested tossing the complete axle in a slough for a week to soffen the rust. This morning we will take the axle off and hook a tractor to each end and try that. I am afraid of the cast center piece but the unit isn't any good to me unless it can be opened up to be used on a double swath of alfalfa, 32 feet.

Since you are taking the axle off the tractor, you can try what my neighbor did for an Oliver front end that was stuck. Build a nice sized bonfire, when you have a big enough pile of red hot coals... lay the bolster and arms in the pile of coals and cover it up with more coals. Let the fire burn out completely and wait for the casting to cool completely. The extentions should be freed up in the bolster! The heat from the fire seems to disolve the rust in between the extension and bolster. Works great!

I sure would not try to force the extensions to move by pulling on them or smacking them with a sledge. {JMO}

Darald,

Have you tried putting a stout bar over the axle and under the outer tie rod arm and trying to get it to "rotate"? You can also beat on the cast part of the axle while soaking with penetrating oil.

I used to fight these things....they drive you crazy if they have been in one position for a spell.

I'm just afraid you are going to damage something if you hook it up to a tractor or two....might work tho, who knows. :>)

Hope ya get it,

Allan

Darald; Can you use a torch to heat things up some and work in some penetrating oil.
