Play in final drive gear on Super A

Howdy, all.

I finished tearing down, cleaning, and resealing the final drive pans on my Super A last night. Previous owner had removed the pans and tossed the gaskets, then refilled the oil without doing anything to seal the pans. Needless to say, the oil was down to about 1/3 qt. The right side is tight, but the left side has a tad of play (less than 1/8") both in the axis through which it rotates and perpendicular to that axis. How much play is allowable before I need to start replacing bearings? (This is the side that sounds noisy to me.)

The pan was clean-- no broken teeth, metal shavings, bearing parts, etc. Are these final drives difficult to work on? (Sorry for all the questions-- the archive search feature seems to be down.)

Thanks,
Darren

Darren,
I have a Super A, bought about two weeks ago. Trying to learn all I can. Write up how it all went, when you're done. Will surely have good nuggets for everybody.

Darren, While you have it apart you may as well replace the bearings on the noisy side. Not sure were your getting that play measurement? At the bull gear?

Scotty,
Thanks for your response. I believe that gear is what you call the bull gear-- the large gear in the final drive that runs to the rear tires via the axle shaft. I was pretty cryptic about the play in that gear. When you try to turn the gear by hand there is a small amount (maybe 1/16" or 1/8") of play that is not present in the other side. There is about the same amount of play when I grab the gear and push and pull it side to side.

From looking at the parts manual, it looks like I need to jack that side, remove the tire, then remove the bearings and replace. Are there any particular difficult spots or pitfalls? How hard are those bearings to take out and replace? I don't have a press, so can these bearings be tapped into place with a block of wood held against the outer race?

Thanks,
Darren

Darren, Youve got the right procedure, be careful not to damage the threads on the axle, you can tap the nut so as not to damage the threads. Also that gear weights a few pounds, block it up with wood or get another pair of hands so you dont damage the teeth.

Scotty,
Thanks a million for your advice. I'll tackle this one as soon as time will allow.
