Easy one for once, What size rear tires should an H have? I've got an H and it has 13.5 38's, I believe, the same size as our M anyway, and they stike me as too big. What do they originally have? Thanks

Hi, Guys I have to put my two cents in here. Dont let this go across as me being a know it all becuase I dont. But Diferent tire manufactures have come up with diferent tire sizes over the years some of them alot of you would say I never heard of that but I have seen alot of them and most all go back to the normal sizes we know now. I beleve the Hs came mostly with 10" rims of the single drop type untill the newer double drops came out.The 11" tire on the 10" rim was a good one for cultivating then the 12.4 38s came in . now alot of people have gone to the 11" double drop rim. I my self have the 11" double with 13.6 38s . If you have 10" rims I would stick with the 11/2s or 12/4s and if you have 11" inch you can go with 12.4s or 13.6s .Also measure the rim from where the beed seats not the outside. JUST MY OPINION

Eric,

If memory servers me right, they originally came out with 11.5/38, which would translate into the new designation of 11.2/38.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan: Yes you are both right and wrong. What is now 11.2x38 would have been a 10x38 in the old days and yes the early H's did come with that tire. Later they went to 11x38 or new designation 12.4x38. I don't think too many were ever sold on 12x38 or 13.6x38, that didn't really come until Super H and more likely 300.

There were areas of the continant outside that huge western plain, looking for wider tires long before they came. People in the east were looking for floatation long before it happened. The mid west and prarries didn't need floatation so it didn't happen quickly.

Hi Hugh,

I see you are an early riser too! :>)

My Dad bought a '51 H new, and I swear it had 13.5/38( or thereabouts) on it. Could this be the case or is my old mind playin' tricks on me?

Also, while I've got you on the phone, I keep reading about all these guys plowing with a H.

I know that different soils surely make a difference, but I cannot imagine even hooking an H to a plow.

I remember that we had to be in low most of the time plowing with a M and a 2/14" plow. On lighter soils, we could go to 2nd.

But, we always had to plow deep for coverage and didn't consider the thing even being in the ground at anything less than 8".

We ran a dairy and were always turning under alfalfa. Those old stands had roots the size of a man's wrist and you could almost hear 'em snap when the lathe hit 'em.

Allan: My dad also bought a new H in 51. How well do you remember some of the details of that tractor? Our H had the same front wheels as SH and 300 and IH disc brakes. He also bought a wide front, the old type with tye rods out front. We had to make modifications as we went to install the wide front. Four years later he bought a 300 Farmall and we really didn't see the horsepower difference some speak of on here. Yes the 300 had live PTO and TA, but put it on the same plow, disk or cultivator we had used on the H and the 300 didn't run away with it.

My opinion, some of those SH upgrades got into a few of the last H's.

We always pulled a No. 8 - 2x14 plow, in a very light sandy loam. I know what you mean about the alfalfa roots, often you could hear the sound of them snaping above the tractor. The alfalfa roots sure took the friskiness out of a frisky young team of horses, when plowing.
