As usual, you guys were right again and have put my "hand wringin'" to an end. Whew!

I worked this 310 pretty hard in some very heavy growth for the past couple of days and just like you said, the "blue smoke" completely stopped just as soon as she leaned into the collar. No oil consumption at all that I can see, so guess my 'sweating bullets' are over.

Aside from not having the power brakes (which I really miss), this thing sounds, feels & pulls just like my old 766 did and that thing (as I recall) had something like 68 horses .

Were these Bosch pumps relatively easy to turn up and could someone have plugged in another 10hp somewhere along the line during the past 25 years? I notice that someone has put oversize tires (maybe 2 sizes) on it all the way around as well.

It pulls way harder than any 656 I've ever operated; and I thought the 686s were supposed to be just a newer version of the 656?

It's definetly gonna pull harder than a 656. According to the Nebraska numbers I have, 656 Diesel gear drive puts out 61.5 hp at 1800 RPM, with 5% torque rise. 666 and early 686 with D-312 put out 66.3 at 2000, with 16% torque rise. 686 with D-310 puts out 66.4 at 2000 with 12% torque rise. The Bosch pump is very easy to turn up. Look at the side of your pump. There are two levers, one to the top and one to the bottom. The top lever is the throttle, throttle linkage is attached to it. The bottom one, with no linkage attached to it, is the fuel control. The farther forward this lever is moved, by turning out the set screw, the more fuel you get. The set screw should be wired in place. If the wire is cut, she's probably been turned up. I wouldn't be afraid to go to about 75 hp.

Okay KB,

Seems I completely misunderstood the 656/686 thing and that would certainly explain the difference. All I know is, that I can really feel it in the seat of my pants.

The wire and seal are on this pump, so guess I'm still "street leagal". :>)
