When a TA goes bad, is there a part in the planetary gear set that usually fails ? What makes them quit working ?

Thanks

Greg

Most times its the ramp and roller set up that fails. Free wheeling in TA mode or shifting the TA to try and slow down. Usually does them in.
The TA is to be used to shift to a lower gear when the engine bogs down. Not to slow the tractor when its over reving from going to fast.
ALso engine back fires that get it turning in the oposite direction on a untuned engine can hurt them.( My 400 does this and I hold the clutch in untill it stops. Its hard on the PTO also.)
I suspect that the planitary gear set fails some times but not near as offten as the Ramp and rollers.
Clutch can wear out also.

I never have looked closely at a worn our ramp and roller but I suspect that the rollers put a small crease in the ramp. This prevents the roller from advancing further and locking up like a clutch. Rebuilders regrind the ramp and install oversize rollers.

I kept the core from my 400. I may take it apart and see if I can fix the ramp and rollers to use on my 300. I see a guy on Ebay sells a Sprag type ramp and roller set for TA's. I may try that. Will see how ambitious I get this winter.
