Today I removed end cap on rear axel to replace seal and I saw why it was leaking so badly. Outer bearing all chewed up and half the balls missing,I would like to know where they went. I guess Im going to have to take the axel houseing off the tractor to replace bearings ? Can anyone give me some pointers, I would be gratfull. Oh ya, how many Farmall row crops used same axel bearings as 460 ? Maybe I could get good used ones. Thanks

these are unique tractors when it comes to axles and bearings, 2 sizes 2" od & 2.5", bearings and housings are specific to each, to change any of them without removing housings take out pto and use bull gear bolt to push axle out by a spacer bridge against other side, you can get at inner bearing also this way. If you plan on keeping the tractor I would advise you to check all bearings in axles & brake shaft, they were noted for bearings failing after years of use, particularly if used under a mounted corn picker.

Why would you want to put a used bearing in there. They are readily available from your Case/IH dealer or any other place that sells bearings and seals. In my opinion it is not worth saving a couple of dollars to farmerize it. Yes, I grew up on a farm and we used to farmerize a lot of things. It usually just delayed the inevitable. We didn't have much in the way of extra money in those days. Just my $0.02 worth.

I have changed an outer bearing without removing the housing. After taking the wheel off, my bearing was also going to pieces, so I just fished out what I could and then shined up the axel with a strip of oxide paper. I think I must have heated the inside race until I could slide it off. I know I stuffed rags inside the housing and then carefully cut the outer race in a couple places with the torch. I finished it with punch and hammer and removed the pieces. Slid new bearing in and was done.
