I went to start my m a few days ago. It started, but I didn't give it enough gas quick enough so it stalled. Now it wont start anymore. When I turn the key it just makes one clicking sound and doens't do anything. The wire hooked from the battery to the starter solenoid moves when power is sent through it, and if I hold the key on long enough the starter solenoid smokes because it gets so hot. I was wondering if this is because i have bad cables dirty ends or is the starter solenoid or starter broken. It always starter before. Maybe I dont have enough juice in the battery to turn the starter. I tried jumping it from another batter, but the other batter was also old, and had a weak charge. I'd appreciate any help. Before i tightened up the cable ends tighter up to the battery they would smoke also. I might just have a bad connection, but I'm not sure.

If it sticks again try an old mechanic's trick. Tap the starter with a hammer, usually unsticks them. If it sticks more than a couple times, have it cked out at a rebuilder.

I have an old W4 McCormick-Deering which had the same problem.Removed the starter and sprayed it good with WD40. Haven't had a problem since.

I agree. It is probably a jammed starter. It will only get worse in that it jams every time you try to start it. Replace the bendix drive. If that doesn't fix it, you will have to split the tractor and replace the ring gear.

Someone may offer advice on filing ring gear teeth. I never tried it but it sounds alot easier than changing ring gears. You will only need to file three or four teeth. YOu will probably notice which ones are bad.

If it is a jammed starter, you will hear a popping sound from that area when you rock the tractor backwards in fifth gear.

A weak battery can cause smoking because a low voltage condition will cause amps to rise above normal when starter calls for juice. Poor connections will do the same.

I tried that tooth filing thing. I'd try a lot to get out of splitting the tractor. (Mine's an H)
Mine wasn't jamming; it wouldn't engage at all, just grind. There were about six worn teeth at each of the two stopping points. This picture's a 'Before.'
I used a Dremel, spent hours carefully reshaping teeth. Did no good at all, far as I can see. I'm still using the hand crank to turn the engine a few degrees every time I shut down, get fresh teeth in front of the starter. That'll do until I have to split the tractor for a new clutch. Might outlast me.

I took the starter off, and it wasn't jammmed. It spun freely. Then I put it back on tightened up the bolts, and it started. It was weird. Maybe it was stuck but it loosened when I took it off. Wardner, what is the bendix drive. Thanks for the tips though. It probably was stuck, but it works now.

The bendix is the little gear and spiral sleeve on the end of the starter shaft.

When we say jammed, we mean the starter is not properly engaging the ring gear and everything gets locked up. It does not mean that the starter is seized when inspected after separation from the tractor.

I think that you count on more jams in the near future if you don't remediate the problem. Good luck.

Another quick fix, that may only be only temporary, is too lubricrate the bendix with a very light oil. YOu do not want to use a high viscosity oil that will add drag in the spiral grooves. This is particularly true in winter.

Your starter may be jammed causing a high current flow when trying to crank. You can put the tractor in 5th gear and try rocking it back & forth to see if it will dis-engage the starter. Or loosen the starter mounting bolts and wiggle the starter to dis-engage the gears. Not uncommon for this tractor.

I agree with big dog my H does this alot I keep a 3/4 wrench in the tool box loosen the bolts a little and wiggle it up and down it usally does the trick. The funny thing is I bought a new starter when CT went out of bussiness a few years back and it still sits on the shelf in the garage. JON
