My 2 bits worth.
First off, did you do any measurements while it was apart? The bores may have been worn a lot and just thinking that you didn't mention breaking the glaze or honing? The valves would only cause a smoke problem if the guides were worn. Leaky valves have no oil running thru them unless you have a problem somewhere else. If you honed or roughed up the glaze on the cylinders and broke in the rings then I would ask how long have you run it since reassembly? If only a couple minutes, then the exhaust may be the culprit instead of the motor. If it smoked real bad before it would have left oil or at least soot in the pipe that may still be burning off.
