My H growls at me!

With a lot of help from this group, I got the engine on my H overhauled and running reasonably smoothly. Now the transmission growls when in any gear except 5th. It does not growl when free-wheeling, so I don't think the problem is with the differential or final drives. I tore it apart, replaced all the seals as well as a couple of gears and bearings that looked bad. When I put it back together, I still have the same growl. Based on some recent posts, I am inclined to think the shifting fork(s) may be bent or out of position allowing/causing 5th gear to rub. My questions:

Does this analysis sound right?

If so, can anyone provide any insight into how to adjust the forks or otherwise fix the problem?

Can it be fixed without completely removing the tranny cover?

Thanks for any help with this as well as past help with the engine, front bolster, brakes, etc! This board provides some fantastic advice!

Based on your description it's a problem with the countershaft - either drive gear (or it's mating gear on the input shaft), or else the bearings supporting the countershaft.

Reason is the countshaft carries power in gears 1 thru 4. But it carries no load in 5th, nor when free-wheeling. So worn parts cause no noise in 5th and while coasting.

Unlikely it's a bent fork problem. Unfortunately I think you're gonna have to go back inside the tranny and take a close look at those countershaft drive gears and bearings - sorry!!

Did you replace the front pilot bearing? My H has growled at me a few times to but only when I am mean to her. Stupid question but is the oil all the way up to the plug in front of the left brake housing ? JON

Yes, I replaced the front bearing and the oil level is good.

Replace the rear bearing;,if you haven't already done the pilot bearing, do it, its easy to get at, they cause more problems than enough, particularly with M's and with British M's & MD's.
