I'm taking the head off my 560 gas, and I'm trying to figure out if I can do the job without taking the gas tank off. I can't seem to get enough room to remove the push rods. I took the side cover off, but there doesn't seem to be enough wiggle room to drop them down either.

on my 706 i just took the four bolts out and stuck a block of wood under the tank and frame. gave me about 6 inches. then i pulled the pushrods up as far as i could and zip tied them together in pairs to keep them from falling back down and slid the head out. you can use rubber bands but i didn't have any at the time.

Tom,
I did my 560 a couple of years ago and had the same predicament. What I did, was drained the tank and removed. Then I took a hacksaw and cut the tank mount rails on each side so I could remove the front portion of the tank mount. That way I had plenty of room to work on engine. When it came time to reassemble, I drilled 2 holes toward each end of the tank mount rails on the section that I did not remove from the tractor, took 2 small pieces (approx. 5 inches long) of bar stock lying around and drilled 2 holes in each end and layed them inside the tank mount rails (can't put them on the outside or else the sheet metal will not fit right) and bolted the pieces to the stationary part and that left enough material to drill and bolt the other section I had removed. When I got it back together it was a perfect fit and next time I, or whoever has to get into the engine will only have to remove the tank and 2 bolts on each side of the tank mount rails and whala...plenty of room. It sounds complicated but it wasn't. Plus I didn't think about doing what Paul said. :)

Same here with me. I did my 460G a couple of years ago and just blocked up the gas tank. Why are you puling the head, if I can ask? Mine was putting air into the radiator. Took the head off and took it to a engine rebuild shop. They MagnaFluxed it and checked it for plane and said the head was good. I didn't want to put it back on the tractor with out an answer so I called an old gentleman who was semi-retired from rebuilding engines. He checked it and found that it was warped side to side between two spark plug holes. We planed the head together and I put it back on and it worked great. Just my experience.

Hi Tom. Just done my 460 gas recently. If you remove the four bolts on the gas tank mount behind the block near the bell housing, you should be able to lift up the tank for extra clearance. Remove the gas cap and loosen some of the other bolts on the tank framework near the steering column so as not to break any castings. I put about two or three inches of blocking under the mount to hold the tank up. You will know your limits when you lift the tank up.This should let you remove the front eight pushrods easily and give the extra clearance for the back four. You might need someone to hold the back four up while you slide the head off the block although I managed alone. Feel free to E-mail me.Paul K.
