I´ve seen 400s painted all red and some with the red and white. Is this difference due to a year break from 1955-56 or 1956-57?

The only paint on the 50 series tractors was the grill. The white on the sides were decals.

400s all red, 450s red with white grill and side panel. Several 400s where shop/farm painted to match the newer 450s.

"400s all red, " actualy the 400s were painted both the all red and the red and white from the factory. though it is questionable wether it was in 55 or 56 when they started the red and white paint scheme. I own a 55' 400 with white paint under the red. I also recomend a book: International
McCormick
Tractors
by Henry Rasmussen

the techical information and model information is highly inaccurate but it does provide rather nice photos, such as a restored 55' 400 with the white paint scheme.

I don't recomend buying this book though because the info is not reliable. such examples include (quoted from book) "the 100 a replacement for the B"

"the C shown here (shows picture of H) featured the same engine of the A and B, but built on the frame of the H and M"

so I say save you money and borrow it from a library or friend.

anyway hope this helps

The red and white scheme was started in 1956, with the introduction of the 50 series. 00 series tractors were also produced in 1956 prior to the 50 series. Your 400 was originally all red, then repainted red and white, then all red again.

"The red and white scheme was started in 1956, with the introduction of the 50 series. " actualy the 50 series were introduced in 57 and I stand by my comment the later 400s had the cream and red paint.
