Well, brother and I are now experts at taking the top cover of the tranny on his 706. This is the same tractor that would not stay in high gear. We found the problem a while ago, or so we though, which was a wore shift fork for the Hi/Lo. Replaced that with a used but in excellent condition shift fork. Worked well for about 3 weeks, then starting popping out of high when the clutch was released. Opened it up again last night. My question: the shift coupler that slides onto the reduction gear (for low) and the direct drive (for High) seems to be wider (about an 1/8th inch) on the side nearest the "Lo" (toward the rear of the tractor) than the "High" side (toward the front of the tractor. We think this tractor was split before we got it, and we were wondering if this coupler could have been put in backwards. It seems to make sense because when shifted into high the coupler still has about an 1/8th to 1/4" room to slide forward on the direct drive gear. Any advice how to fix this one? Will the tractor have to be split to switch around the coupler? This is the most frustrating tractor!

Have you guys gone through the detent mechanism hanging off the bottom of the cover yet? Our 786 used to pop out of low range. I was told that the detent spring had probably fallen off. Upon pulling the cover, I found that the spring was still there, but was very weak when compaired to a new spring. Also, the detent roller for high/low was missing, causing sping tension on the detents to be even less. Replaced spring and rollers, shifts like new. If the detents themselves look worn, replace the detent plate. Shift linkage and detent mechanism on a 786 is a little different than 706, I know, but it is the same transmission, same idea, just different shift pattern. Also, like Ace said, your external linkage needs to be in perfect shape. Inspect the entire linkage, from shift lever to trans cover. Replace anything that is questionable. Follow the ajustment procedure found in the service manual. If you think this is a fustrating job to do on a 06, you should try an 86!

thanks for the advice. I knew I could count on you guys.
We are currently going through the linkage from the shift lever down. I would be interested in trying a new detent plate, but they are hard to come by. The spring is still strong, and the rollers do not have any slop.
Hopefully we can straighten it out this weekend before my brother and I lose the remainder of our hair!

Matt can't put in backwards the spline on the shaft not same as gear on direct drive, the grove for the fork would not be in right place. Your problem is in the shift linkage under deck plate, if it is not good and tight it will not move the gear far enough forward, but the gears will have some space between the slider and the one it slides on. The first 56's had a problem with this, until they changed the cut on the gears, I would file the noch for the detent so gear would ingage more and that helped. You must remember that if a sliding gear is warn bad you will never hold it in gear no matter what you do.... So make sure linkage is good and tight.
