I've got an IH 674 and was wondering how much weight the 3 pt hitch can carry. I wanna put a barrel full of cement on it for some weight for the rear end, but I don't wanna overload it.

Mark: Your hitch will be Cat II thus the barrel of cement will be just play. Design it so you can set it on the ground while not in use.

Thanks, Hugh. Hopefully it will counterbalance my loader a little and help with traction.

Mark: The barrel of concrete will do a great job for your intentions. I had one for use on 300 initially then 560 and 656. I put a 3 point cross bar through the barrel, about 14" from bottom and a top link attachment about same distance from top. Put some rebar in there tying top link and bottom cross bar together. Run rebar from top to bottom, then when barrel rusts out you still have a good counter weight. I have also seen guys put a flat bar out the back so they can hitch a trailer or other to back of barrel. I don't think you would want to do a lot of hauling with it, but it is great to be able to just move some implement out of your way.

These not only give you great traction when doing loader work, but increase the tractor stability when doing loader work.

Hugh,

Thanks for the info on building the barrel. I'm gonna follow your plan. I'm not really familiar with 3 point hitch stuff, though. What did you use for a top link attachment? Is this something I can pick up at the local tractor supply place? Thanks again for your help.

Mark; What I used was two pieces of 2-1/2 x 1/2 flat bar about a foot long, welded them paralell and right distance apart, for top link to fit between, using some scrap rebar, cut a couple holes in barrel to put it out through. Like Novel Idea Guy say doesn't need to be fancy.

You can make a top link attachment out of some scrap. All you need is a U shape with a hole drilled through it that the free end of the top link fits in. A pin goes through the hole and holds the top link, but allows it to pivot.

Thanks Novel Idea Guy. I have some scrap here at the house that I could make something like that out of.
