I have a 1938 F 20 I get condensation at the point of where the carbuetor baolts to the manifold and I cannot adjust the carbuetor, do I need to rebuild the carb and replace the gasket, or is there another problem. the engine runs a little erattic but under load it smooths out.

Gary - - I think I am battling the same or similar issue. Fully retarded, my '35 runs almost fine under no load, slow or fast. Fully advanced, it misses 30-40% of the time. Under a heavy load or accelleration though, it runs great. Have ruled out carb and mag issues. I lapped the valves when initially overhauled, but tonight, the head is coming off again to have the valve system professionally rebuilt, as my issues are pointing towards that end of the engine.

Question: when your tractor is running irratically, can you hear a light popping sound thru the inlet of the carb at the same moment that it misses? That's my clue to a head issue.

Will keep you an all others informed as to the outcome of the the head rebuild.

That eratic running with no load is a common problem. I think it is because the distributer block in the magneto is worn. This makes the fire jump around. a trick I use in parades is to retard the spark till it smooths out.

My carb used to frost unitl I rebuilt the carb. My carb was leaking internally. You will want to check the throttle shaft wear and make sure you don't have any internal leaks. I never did get my carb straightened out and ended up getting a carb from a nice guy in Nebraska. That solved all my problems.

Even with good spark and a sorted out carb my skips a little when advanced. Once i put it under a load, the tractor straightens up an runs smoothly. I have come to the conclusion that this is the nature of the beast. Not bad for 1930's technology when you look at it that way.
